Meloni Faces Backlash Over Decree Limiting Migrant Students and Banning Face Veils in Schools

Critics have alleged that the Italian government is intensifying polarizing political rhetoric as it approaches next year’s general election, following the approval of a controversial decree. The measures include a cap on the number of newly arrived migrants permitted in school classrooms and a prohibition on the wearing of burqas and niqabs in educational institutions.

The decree has drawn sharp condemnation from rights campaigners, who argue that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is attempting to appeal to far-right voters ahead of the upcoming vote. Meloni, who leads the Brothers of Italy party, described the policy as a set of “commonsense measures” designed to foster genuine integration rather than division.

Opponents, however, characterize the move as shameful and politically motivated, suggesting the government is exploiting cultural and religious tensions for electoral gain rather than addressing the practical needs of immigrant students.
