Melissa Barrera Open to ‘Scream’ Return if Spyglass Loses Franchise Rights

Melissa Barrera has stated she would be willing to reprise her role in the ‘Scream’ franchise, but only under the condition that Spyglass Media Group no longer controls the production rights. The actress was let go from the horror series in 2023, but clarified that her grievance lies with the studio rather than the films themselves.

During a recent interview with JustWatch, Barrera addressed whether she might ever return, stating unequivocally that she would not work with the company currently holding the license. She expressed fondness for the franchise, noting she had an “amazing time” filming the earlier installments, but accused the leadership of labeling her with claims she denied and failing to issue an apology even after she was vindicated.

The controversy stems from Spyglass’s decision to fire Barrera after she posted social media comments criticizing Israel during the conflict in Gaza. At the time, the studio declared a “zero tolerance” policy for antisemitism and hate speech, asserting that her posts crossed the line. Barrera has maintained that she was being unfairly targeted.

“Even with an apology, I wouldn’t go back to work with them,” Barrera said. “But if the franchise were ever to leave those hands and go into hands that I think honor Wes Craven’s legacy more, I think yeah.”

Barrera starred in the 2022 releases ‘Scream’ and ‘Scream VI’ before her departure. The seventh installment premiered earlier this year. In addition to discussing her potential return, the ‘In the Heights’ actress reflected on the solidarity shown to musician Macklemore following his removal from Ed Sheeran’s tour due to his support for Palestine. She praised the support from artists like Finneas, noting that she did not receive similar backing three years ago because people were “too scared,” but observed that the cultural climate has shifted since then.
