Maybank CEO: Asia’s Ultra-Rich Turn to Gold and Digital Assets as Chinese Wealth Flows to Malaysia

Asia’s ultra-high-net-worth individuals are increasingly diversifying their portfolios across traditional financial instruments, physical assets, and innovative digital holdings, according to Alvin Lee, CEO of Maybank Singapore. In an interview highlighting shifting wealth trends, Lee noted that the region’s wealthiest clients are maintaining a strong appetite for real estate and precious metals while growing open to newer asset classes.

Lee emphasized the enduring appeal of gold as a store of value, pointing to its price appreciation as evidence of its robustness. Although gold has retreated from earlier record highs, it remains trading at elevated levels around $4,400 per ounce. Goldman Sachs has forecast the commodity could reach $4,900 by year-end, driven largely by central bank purchases.

While interest in physical bullion persists, Lee observed that younger generations within the ultra-wealthy demographic are driving curiosity toward digital assets and cryptocurrencies. This shift coincides with a broader focus on intergenerational wealth transfer, prompting family offices and high-net-worth individuals to explore modern investment vehicles alongside established ones.

Singapore continues to solidify its position as a premier destination for offshore wealth. Lee remarked that the city-state benefits directly or indirectly from regional instability, citing its stable government, strong intellectual property protections, and favorable tax environment. With tensions in the Middle East prompting some capital to flee Dubai for Singapore, Lee reported that physical gold is being shipped from the UAE to Singapore in historically significant volumes.

Meanwhile, wealthy Chinese individuals are showing growing interest in Malaysia as both an investment hub and a potential residence. Lee explained that Malaysia offers attractive valuations relative to Singapore, making it a compelling alternative for business expansion and family relocation. He highlighted Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, and Penang as key destinations benefiting from this trend, with many Chinese buyers acquiring real estate for personal use and commercial purposes.

These migration patterns come amid a backdrop where China leads the world in billionaire population, according to the March Hurun Global Rich List, which recorded 1,110 billionaires in China, surpassing the United States’ total of 1,000.
