Manchester United have begun retailing small sections of turf from Old Trafford, selling preserved cubes of the stadium’s pitch for £125 apiece. The move was announced on the same day the club reported that its overall debt remains above £1 billion.
The initial release of the souvenir items has already been fully sold out. Each piece of grass, measuring 7x7cm, is encased in a glass cube and displayed within a black presentation case. According to the club’s website, the items are intended to serve as a “priceless memento of iconic games played at home,” aiming to keep the memories of matchdays alive for supporters.
The initiative comes following a significant overhaul of the stadium’s playing surface this summer. For the first time in 14 years, the Old Trafford pitch was completely dug up and stripped back to its foundation. The preserved sections are a remnant of this process.
Financially, the club reported a record revenue of £677.6 million and an operating profit of £22.6 million for the 2025-26 season. However, these figures were offset by a pre-tax loss of £43 million. Additionally, the club confirmed it has spent £63.5 million on purchasing land for a new stadium project, which is expected to have a total cost exceeding £2 billion.
Honestly, this is brilliant marketing. Limited edition luxury items always fly off the shelves, no matter the context.
