Manchester Confirmed as Host for 2027 G20 Summit

Manchester has been selected to host the 2027 G20 leaders’ summit, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressing his delight at the prospect of welcoming world figures, including US President Donald Trump, to the city. The event is scheduled to take place on November 27 and 28, 2027, at the Manchester Central Convention Centre.

Although the city was chosen earlier this year before Burnham assumed the premiership, Downing Street stated that preparations will now intensify. The government expects hundreds of local residents to be involved in the organization of what will be the largest summit ever held in Manchester.

Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, addressed past tensions with Trump, who had previously referred to him disparagingly as “the mayor of a town.” Burnham recalled telling the US president during their first phone call that “Manchester isn’t ‘some town’…this is Manchester,” adding that he chose to laugh off the remark and move past it.

Previously, while serving as mayor, Burnham had stated he would not welcome a visit from the American president. However, speaking as he traveled to New York for a meeting with Trump, he emphasized the importance of focusing on the present moment rather than past political statements.

Councillor Garry Bridges, the new leader of Manchester City Council, described the announcement as previously “unthinkable” and expressed hope that the summit would alter Trump’s perception of the city.

The UK last hosted the G20 in London in 2009, with security costs estimated at £7.2 million. The current G20 presidency is held by the United States, which is hosting this year’s summit in Miami in December. The forum, established in 1999, brings together 19 of the world’s largest economies along with representatives from the European Union and the African Union, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the global population and over 85% of global wealth.
