News organizations including CNN, MSNBC, and Politico have filed a request with a federal court to enjoin the Trump administration’s ban on their reporters from the White House. The outlets argue that the administration has continued to apply the restrictions unpredictably and inconsistently, despite an existing judicial restraining order.
The legal challenge comes as former special prosecutor Jack Smith prepares to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill. Scheduled for 9am ET, the hearing is expected to be contentious given the bipartisan scrutiny surrounding Smith’s conduct.
Smith, who directed the criminal investigations into Donald Trump regarding the January 6, 2021 insurrection, efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and the handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, has faced significant backlash from Republican lawmakers. Several GOP legislators have called for inquiries into Smith’s decision to obtain telephone toll records and messages from Republican members of Congress during the course of his investigations.
Both sides need to calm down. Press freedom and oversight shouldn’t be pawns in this mess.
