Madonna Returns to VMAs Stage as Taylor Swift Marks History in 2026 ceremony

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards air Sunday evening, headlined by Madonna making her first appearance on the VMA stage in more than 20 years. The “Queen of Pop” is also leading the night’s nominations with 13 entries. If she wins all categories, her career total will rise from 20 to 33.

For Taylor Swift, the event marks a significant milestone. She is receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honors, an award recognizing artists who have pushed the boundaries of music video and visual storytelling. With 11 nominations, Swift is poised to surpass Beyoncé and become the most-awarded artist in VMAs history, breaking their previous tie of 30 wins each.

Swift will also premiere her new video for “Patient Zero” during the broadcast. Meanwhile, the late Nirvana is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award, honoring their lasting impact on the medium.

Hosted by Snoop Dogg, the show begins at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT). Red carpet coverage starts an hour earlier on CBS News Los Angeles. The ceremony takes place at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, marking the event’s return to the West Coast for the first time since 2017.

Viewers can tune in via CBS affiliates, MTV, or stream the event on Paramount+. Fan voting for best new artist and song of the summer remains open until the broadcast concludes.

The performer lineup includes a tribute to Kacey Musgraves honoring Dolly Parton, a new single debut from LISA, and a George Michael tribute featuring Sombr, RAYE, and Teddy Swims. Other acts scheduled to perform include GENER8ION, Gunna, Shaboozey, Sienna Spiro, and Yung Lean, who will premiere “Storm II.” Presenters include Charli xcx, David Corenswet, Teyana Taylor, and Troye Sivan.

Last year, the awards were held at UBS Arena in New York, with Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga among the top winners. This year, the focus shifts to Los Angeles as the music industry celebrates two decades of artistic evolution.
