London Contemporary Orchestra Co-founder Critiques Class Barriers in Classical Music

Robert Ames, who co-founded the London Contemporary Orchestra (LCO) 18 years ago and is stepping down from the role today, has expressed frustration with the classical music industry’s superficial approach to diversity. Ames argues that the sector often discusses inclusion while failing to acknowledge the economic realities facing those who cannot afford to pursue a career in music.

In a recent commentary for The Guardian, the conductor and composer highlighted how significantly more difficult it has become for individuals without financial support to establish themselves in the field. He recalled a time when there was a clear pathway into the profession, describing his own upbringing as a child from a working-class background.

Ames noted that he was able to access education through state schools, receive inexpensive lessons via council-backed music services, and participate in youth orchestras. When his family could not afford an instrument, he borrowed a viola, an opportunity that was once commonplace but is now increasingly rare.
