New Delhi authorities released three leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party on Sunday, following their arrest on Saturday as they arrived to organize demonstrations against a controversial overhaul of electoral rolls. The youth-driven movement has called for the resignation of India’s top election official.
Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were freed after agreeing to a one-year pledge to maintain public order, according to Ratna Singh, the group’s legal director. The specific parameters of this condition remained unclear, raising questions about whether it would constrain their ability to participate in future demonstrations.
The detention occurred after police intercepted the trio’s flight from Mumbai upon its landing in the capital. Authorities had mounted a significant security operation in New Delhi, detaining over 2,000 individuals, including several opposition lawmakers, in anticipation of the protests. Transport disruptions were widespread, with train services to the city halted, metro stations shut down, and mobile internet access suspended in certain areas. Police later confirmed that the majority of those arrested were released by late Saturday.
Upon his release, Dipke launched a sharp critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labeling the premier “an embarrassment to India.” Writing on the social media platform X, Dipke stated, “Never has this country seen a bigger coward and bully,” intensifying the rhetoric surrounding the political tensions.
Releasing them after a pledge feels like a temporary fix. Will this actually stop the protests?
Cockroach Party? Really? Sounds like a prank, but the crackdown on free speech is no joke.
