Labour Retains Holborn Seat but Suffers Narrow Victory Over Greens

Labour has secured the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, defeating Green Party leader Zack Polanski in a contest widely regarded as a critical indicator of the party’s standing with defectors.

Although Camden council leader Sagal Abdi-Wali retained the north London constituency for Labour, the result signaled a substantial erosion of the party’s support base. The ruling party’s majority was sharply cut, reflecting the influence of Green Party momentum in the area.

The by-election was triggered following the departure of former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer from the House of Commons. Political analysts had identified this contest as a key test of whether Labour, led by Andy Burnham, could reclaim voters who had previously shifted their allegiance to the Greens.

Voting concluded on October 8, 2026, with the count continuing overnight to determine the final results.
