Labour Insiders Warn Budget Lacks Ambition as Voters Associate Burnham with ‘Trying’

Following Labour’s annual conference, party strategists have been closely examining a word cloud generated by pollsters More in Common. The tool highlights the phrases voters most strongly associate with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, producing results that are typically unflattering for political figures.

While the prime minister’s version included its share of negative descriptors, one particular term has captured the attention of Labour insiders: “trying.” The association suggests a perception of effort without necessarily conveying competence or decisive action.

This finding has exacerbated existing anxieties within the party regarding the upcoming budget. Some insiders argue that the government risks appearing trivial or “twee” if it focuses on minor fixes rather than demonstrating significant ambition. There is a growing concern that if voters do not feel materially better off by the time of the next election, the party could face severe electoral consequences.

  1. Does anyone else think ‘trying’ is a compliment? At least he’s not pretending everything is fine when it clearly isn’t.

  2. If ‘trying’ is the main association, Burnham needs to deliver results, not just promises. Voters are tired of effort without impact.
