At the Theatre Royal Bath, Kneehigh’s production of Tristan & Yseult continues to captivate audiences with its intoxicating blend of circus chaos, cabaret allure, and comedic flair anchored by medieval tragedy. Originally staged in 2003 against the Cornish backdrop where the tale of knights, love potions, and infidelity originated, the show quickly gained a devoted following, particularly for its interactive elements such as audience members blowing up balloons. It returned to widespread acclaim during its tenth anniversary celebration.
Adapted and directed by Emma Rice, this latest iteration embraces its wild, boundary-breaking spirit. The performance features a troop of actors dressed in anoraks, reinforcing the show’s unique aesthetic, alongside spectacular circus stunts. Audiences are once again invited to participate in the jubilation of King Mark’s wedding to Yseult, played by Nandi Bhebhe, while John Leader’s Tristan endures his concealed passion from the sidelines.
