Klopp’s Goalkeeper Dilemma: Who Replaces Neuer for Germany?

Following Germany’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup and the subsequent retirement of Manuel Neuer, a significant vacancy has opened up in the national team’s goalkeeper position. While Jonas Urbig is widely viewed as the natural successor, his opportunity is severely limited by Neuer’s continued presence as Bayern Munich’s first-choice keeper. Consequently, it is considered unlikely that new coach Jürgen Klopp will include the 23-year-old in his squad announcement for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands, Greece, and Serbia.

Klopp’s appointment comes with a mandate to rebuild Germany into a sustainable powerhouse rather than chasing immediate results, making age and long-term potential critical factors in his selection process. Oliver Baumann, the 36-year-old Hoffenheim shot-stopper, represents the selfless professional who seamlessly stepped in when Neuer was preferred ahead of him for the World Cup squad. However, with Baumann turning 38 by Euro 2028 and 40 by the 2030 World Cup, his timeline may not align with Klopp’s vision for the future.

Speaking to Bild, Baumann confirmed he had exchanged messages with the new coach but deferred the final decision to Klopp’s announcement on September 17. “We’ll see about the rest—that’s for him to handle,” Baumann stated.

Alternatively, Marc-André ter Stegen could return to the fold via his loan spell at Ajax. Known for his ability to play out from the back, ter Stegen fits Klopp’s high-pressing, attacking philosophy more closely than Baumann. Despite a career disrupted by injuries and a legal dispute with Barcelona, his move to the Dutch Eredivisie has revitalized his prospects. Former Germany captain Lothar Matthäus told Sky Sports, “I assume he’ll definitely be in the mix. If he continues to perform well in Amsterdam, he’s a candidate for the number one spot.”

Alexander Nübel, currently at Besiktas, remains another option, though former national team goalkeeper Toni Schumacher warned that moving to Turkey removes the 29-year-old from the German spotlight. “It simply has a positive effect when you play in your own country week after week and thrill the fans with your saves,” Schumacher noted.

In an unexpected twist, Loris Karius has emerged as a candidate due to his history with Klopp at Liverpool. Now 33 and playing for Schalke, Karius is looking to redeem himself after the infamous errors in the 2018 Champions League final. “When people associate me with that, it’s a testament to the performance I’m putting in. That’s great,” Karius said regarding his renewed chances.

If Klopp opts for youth development, several emerging talents are in contention. Noah Atubolu, Eintracht Frankfurt’s 24-year-old keeper, previously led Germany’s U21 side, while Freiburg’s Mio Backhaus, who is eligible for Japan through his mother, has progressed through German youth ranks. Other names include Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen, Stuttgart’s Dennis Seimen, and Diant Ramaj. Notably, Dahmen, Seimen, and Ramaj hold eligibility for other nations through heritage, adding urgency for Klopp to integrate them now if he wishes to secure their services.

Andreas Köpke, who won the 1996 European Championship with Germany, advised Bild that the federation must prioritize developing a young number one. He highlighted Urbig, Backhaus, and Atubolu as key figures, though Urbig’s path depends heavily on how long Neuer continues to play at Bayern Munich.
