Kieren Perkins, Australia’s most senior sport executive and former Olympic gold medalist, has called for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to modernize the sporting program for the Brisbane 2032 Games.
Perkins argued that several traditional Olympic sports currently on the program lack “modern relevance whatsoever,” suggesting the IOC must adapt to stay connected with contemporary audiences.
The call comes as the IOC looks to reverse a long-term trend of expanding the number of sports at the Games. While the Sydney 2000 Olympics featured 28 sports, Los Angeles 2028 is set to include 36, often incorporating multiple disciplines such as road and track cycling that require separate venues.
Perkins indicated that there is an opening for popular modern sports such as cricket and netball to be included in the Australian-hosted Games, signaling a potential shift toward a more current and engaging Olympic lineup.
Netball inclusion would be historic. It’s huge in Australia and the Commonwealth but has never made it to the Olympics.
Doesn’t adding more sports just make the Games too long? Less is sometimes more for viewership.
