The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., is approaching bankruptcy and may cease operations as early as Tuesday, according to a report by The Washington Post. The institution’s board of trustees, chaired by President Donald Trump, has suggested that allowing the president’s name to be displayed on the facility’s facade could be the sole method to avert what they describe as imminent and “certain fiscal collapse.”
Trustees warned that the center would be unable to meet payroll or cover maintenance expenses within weeks. These findings were detailed in a 57-page report presented ahead of a special board meeting scheduled for Tuesday. During this session, the Trump-led board is anticipated to address both the severe financial crisis and critical physical renovation needs of the building.
The Post indicated that board members are advising an immediate closure of the main structure due to escalating costs. Furthermore, the newspaper reported that Trump has offered assistance to the Kennedy Center contingent upon acknowledgment of his involvement. The report characterized this development as “a remarkable new phase in Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center,” noting ongoing turmoil, leadership changes, and litigation since he assumed the chairmanship last year.
Donald Trump appointed himself chairman shortly after beginning his second term. In December, his selected board voted to rename the venue the “Trump-Kennedy” Center, but a court subsequently blocked the change. Since Trump’s assumption of power, numerous artists have canceled performances, and media outlets have noted ticket sales dropping to their lowest levels since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Financial projections reveal the center is expected to collect approximately $124 million of its budgeted $220 million in revenue for the past fiscal year. This shortfall results in a deficit of roughly $23 million even after significant spending reductions. A spokesperson for the center attributed the difficulties to “financial mismanagement by previous leadership” and claimed that Trump’s association has successfully attracted new donors.
