Prediction market platform Kalshi has appointed former FBI special agent Sean Fern to head its inaugural anti-money laundering division, a strategic move as regulators intensify scrutiny over the rapidly expanding industry.
Fern, who previously served as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn and led investigations into international corruption at the bureau—including the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal involving Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund—will focus on detecting suspicious activity and ensuring compliance with financial crime laws.
“I want to make sure it’s a hard place to launder money or evade sanctions and commit fraud,” Fern told NPR. He emphasized that daily operations will involve rigorous customer identification, tracing the source of funds, and referring suspicious cases to law enforcement.
The hiring comes as Kalshi experiences explosive growth. According to data from TickerTracker, the platform has processed over $260 billion in bets so far this year, a figure triple the total volume recorded for all of 2025.
This initiative mirrors strategies adopted by cryptocurrency exchanges during the sector’s early boom, such as Binance’s recruitment of former law enforcement officials. However, that approach faced skepticism after Binance founder Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to money laundering charges in 2023.
For Kalshi, the appointment aims to preempt similar legal troubles. The company faces mounting pressure regarding allegations of market manipulation and insider trading, highlighted by recent investigations into former Rep. George Santos, who is accused of profiting from trades while publicly false about his attendance at a presidential event.
