Joby Aviation has announced the completion of the first-ever autonomous flight across the United States, marking a significant expansion of its capabilities beyond electric air taxi services. The startup successfully navigated a converted Cessna Caravan from Buchanan Field Airport in California to Dare County Regional Airport in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, covering a distance of 3,199 miles entirely without human control inputs.
The aircraft, equipped with Joby’s autonomous flight system, executed all phases of flight autonomously, including taxiing, takeoff, cruising, and landing. While a safety pilot monitored the journey onboard, the company supervised operations remotely from its headquarters in California and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
Following the eastbound leg of the trip, the autonomous aircraft is scheduled to return westward, making stops in cities such as Raleigh, North Carolina; Salt Lake City; and Portland, Oregon. This achievement highlights the versatility of Joby’s technology, which can be integrated into existing aircraft platforms.
While Joby is primarily recognized for its piloted, fully electric air taxis—currently being demonstrated in New York City ahead of a planned public launch later this year—this transcontinental feat demonstrates potential applications in commercial freight, emergency response, and defense logistics.
