Jim Copenhaver, a survivor of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. The House Republican account on social media confirmed his passing, noting that he succumbed to injuries sustained two years prior.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Copenhaver, who was gravely wounded in the horrific shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania,” the House GOP posted. “Jim endured unimaginable hardship with strength and perseverance. We join his family and loved ones in mourning his loss and praying for them during this difficult time.”
Copenhaver, 76, was one of two attendees injured on July 13, 2024. David Dutch of New Kensington suffered injuries, while Corey Comperatore was killed in the attack.
Medical reports indicate that Copenhaver was struck by two bullets: one in the triceps and another that fragmented his colon and caused significant nerve damage. He was hospitalized shortly after the incident and discharged about a week later.
Nearly a year after the event, Copenhaver and Dutch appeared on KDKA-TV to recount the chaos of the rally. Copenhaver described hearing a sound like “pew” as his sleeve was pulled, initially failing to realize he had been shot until he turned around and was hit a second time.
