Jersey pension rises above £16,000 following 4.7% increase

Jersey pensioners will see their annual income rise by £734 following the implementation of a government top-up. The 4.7% adjustment raises the total value of a full pension to £16,294 per year.

The increase, amounting to an additional £14 per week, aligns with the statutory requirement for the pension to be updated every October based on the pensioner retail price index recorded in June.

Senator Elaine Millar, the Minister for Social Security, emphasized the importance of maintaining adequate support for retirees. “Our pensioners have contributed to Jersey throughout their working lives and it is important that the old age pension continues to provide a strong foundation for old age,” she said.

Millar also drew attention to supplementary aid available to those on lower incomes who may struggle with rising expenses related to healthcare and heating. She pointed to specific programs such as the Pension Plus scheme, the Health Access Scheme, and the Cold Weather Bonus as vital resources for vulnerable individuals.

“We also recognise that pensioners on lower incomes can face particular pressure from healthcare and heating costs, which is why additional support is available,” Millar stated. She encouraged eligible residents to verify what assistance they might qualify for through these channels.

This announcement follows Millar’s recent declarations regarding the prioritization of mandatory workplace pensions, aimed at bolstering retirement savings alongside the state provision.

  1. Glad they highlighted the Cold Weather Bonus. Many pensioners don’t realize they qualify for that extra help.
