Jarvis Cocker and Garth Jennings recall early Paris days ahead of Pulp documentary

Ahead of the premiere of a vibrant new documentary chronicling the history of the Sheffield-based band Pulp, frontman Jarvis Cocker and filmmaker Garth Jennings have reflected on their early years together in Paris, as well as the darker periods that shaped the group.

Cocker recounted a humorous incident from when Jennings first relocated to France. The Pulp singer dropped by his friend’s apartment for a welcome visit during Bonfire Night, bringing along fireworks. However, the gathering nearly resulted in legal trouble after Cocker realized the proximity of Jennings’ residence to the École Militaire, a military establishment.

“It turned out Garth’s apartment was quite near to the – not an army base, but what’s it called?” Cocker recalled. Jennings supplied the correct landmark, identifying it as the École Militaire.

Beyond these lighthearted memories, the pair discussed the inspirations behind their work, citing the Swedish pop legends Abba as a significant influence. Despite the retrospective nature of the film, both indicated that the creative partnership is not over, hinting at the possibility of future recordings from Pulp.

  1. Finally, a documentary about them that doesn’t focus entirely on the scandal years. Hope it captures their artistic journey properly.

  2. I love how they mention Abba as an influence! So few people know that connection, but it really shows in the melodies.
