James Gunn took to Threads to confirm that he has already begun work on his next filmmaking project, even as anticipation builds for the upcoming release of “Superman: Man of Tomorrow.” The sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
In response to a fan’s inquiry about whether he was ready to start scripting again, Gunn replied, “Already in it.” He added that taking on new writing work was something he felt compelled to do while waiting for the assembly process of the current film to conclude.
Gunn also verified that the assembly cut of “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” is now complete. This update follows news from August, when the director confirmed that principal photography on the superhero installment had wrapped.
The film serves as a follow-up to 2025’s “Superman,” with David Corenswet reprising his role as the iconic hero. The plot sees Superman reluctantly teaming with Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, to confront a more formidable enemy: the superintelligent villain Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
The ensemble cast includes several returning actors from the first film, such as Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
Milly Alcock is also set to return, having made a cameo as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El in the previous movie and headlining the DC film “Supergirl” earlier this summer. Additionally, the sequel will introduce Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, a character who made his debut in the HBO Max series “Lanterns.”
Beyond his directorial duties, Gunn has co-led DC Studios alongside Peter Safran since 2022. Speaking to Variety in January, Gunn praised his co-leader, stating, “Peter’s the best. He does everything I don’t do well. He keeps the ship steady, keeps everyone aligned, connects us with Jim Lee and the comics side and unifies departments that used to operate separately.”
“What we share is a genuine love for these characters. We know what a privilege it is to help shape how people see them now — and that responsibility is something we take seriously,” Gunn added.
July 2027 feels so far away. Let the speculation begin!
Fun fact: Aaron Pierre as John Stewart has been a fan dream for years. Great casting choice.
Already writing? I hope he isn’t spreading himself too thin. Quality over speed.
So Corenswet and Hoult are teaming up? Finally, some good superhero dynamics.
Writing while waiting for assembly? That kind of productivity is honestly inspiring. Can’t wait for Brainiac.
