Two years after facing intense criticism and mockery over its rebranding campaign, Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled its first new all-electric model, the Type 01. The launch, held in New York, signifies a pivotal moment for the British luxury automaker as it attempts to pivot from cultural controversy to tangible product success.
The new vehicle is a four-door Grand Tourer featuring a long bonnet that pays homage to the iconic 1960s E-Type. According to JLR, the Type 01 is the most technically advanced and aerodynamic Jaguar ever built. It boasts approximately 1,000 horsepower, enabling acceleration from zero to 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds. The company claims the car can achieve a range of up to 320 miles at sustained highway speeds, though it carries a steep entry price of £130,000.
The unveiling comes in the wake of a highly publicized controversy in 2024. That year, Jaguar introduced a surreal advertising campaign and revealed concept cars in striking colors, including “Miami Pink.” The launch was widely derided in the press and on social media as an example of “woke” corporate strategy, with critics arguing the brand was abandoning its heritage. Despite the backlash, the uproar kept the struggling Jaguar name in the public eye during a period when its sales were declining significantly.
Matthias Schmidt of Schmidt Automotive Research noted that the controversy, while uncomfortable, served a functional purpose. “It brought Jaguar from the back pages to the front pages,” Schmidt explained. “Everyone is now talking about what would have been another boring product.” The attention occurred against the backdrop of a £15 billion investment strategy announced in early 2023, aimed at transforming Jaguar into a luxury-only electric marque.
Leadership and creative changes have followed the initial backlash. Design chief Gerry McGovern has departed the company, and JLR has parted ways with the agency responsible for the controversial rebranding. Additionally, the firm has appointed a new chief executive. However, industry experts warn that the Type 01 represents a high-stakes gamble for the parent company.
“I think it really is a last throw of the dice,” said automotive journalist Steve Fowler. “JLR has struggled to make serious money with Jaguar in the past, and that’s what it’s all about.”
The competitive landscape for premium electric vehicles is crowded, with rivals including Porsche, Mercedes-AMG, and emerging Chinese brands such as Denza. Ginny Buckley of Electrifying.com acknowledged the quality of the new model but highlighted the commercial challenge ahead. “What ultimately matters is whether Jaguar has built something extraordinary enough to justify blowing up everything it stood for before,” she said. “The car is good enough to silence critics, but the next challenge will be getting people to buy it.”
The Type 01 is expected to be the first of three new electric designs from Jaguar, marking the beginning of a new era for the classic brand as it seeks to rebuild its reputation through engineering rather than marketing spectacle.
Porsche Taycan owners are definitely paying attention. This is a huge gamble for Jaguar to succeed commercially.
Surprised they didn’t stick with Miami Pink! This serious GT style feels much more authentic to the brand.
Strange how the ‘woke’ backlash actually kept them relevant. Glad they pivoted to engineering now.
I wonder if the £130k price tag will scare buyers away despite the impressive specs.
Finally, a car that looks like a Jaguar should. That long bonnet is exactly what they needed.
