Israel’s Culture Minister, Miki Zohar, has publicly called for the revocation of Israeli citizenship from the creators of the documentary film NAZA. Zohar accused the film’s directors, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, of committing “treason against the state” due to the content of their recent work.
Abraham and Szor are acclaimed filmmakers who recently received an Oscar for their documentary, which investigates the high number of civilian deaths in Gaza. The film, which was produced in collaboration with The Guardian, examines the practices of Israeli intelligence regarding airstrike casualty estimates.
The title NAZA refers to a Hebrew acronym utilized by Israel’s Mossad intelligence service. In military terminology, the term denotes an estimated projection of civilian fatalities anticipated to result from a specific airstrike in Gaza. The documentary explores how these projections are made and the implications for civilian safety during military operations.
