Israel’s ambassador to Australia, Hillel Newman, has expressed hope that the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks could serve as a catalyst for restoring “traditional friendship” between the two nations. This sentiment was echoed as hundreds gathered in eastern Sydney on Wednesday to commemorate the date.
However, diplomatic relations have deteriorated significantly since 2023 due to a variety of ongoing issues. Despite the ambassador’s optimism for a bilateral reset, tensions remain palpable within the community landscape.
In the lead-up to the commemorations, leaders from Australia’s Palestinian community called on the federal government to take further action to assist diaspora members suffering as a result of the war in Gaza. The contrast between the diplomatic overtures and the community’s urgent appeals highlights the complex emotional and political climate surrounding the anniversary.
Traditional friendship? Diplomatic relations have soured deeply since 2023. I find this optimism hard to believe without concrete policy changes.
It is brave of the ambassador to push for a reset when community tensions are so visibly high right now.
