The Football Association of Israel has strongly condemned Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson, labeling his recent remarks as reflecting “ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity.” The backlash follows comments made by Hallgrimsson during a press conference regarding the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Israel on September 27 and October 4.
When questioned about maintaining player focus amid the political tensions surrounding the matches, Hallgrimsson drew a sharp distinction between the nation and its actions. “We’re not playing with genocide, we’re playing against genocide. We’re playing against Israel, we’re not playing with Israel,” he stated.
In response, the Israel FA took to social media to defend the country’s record, highlighting its contributions to humanity and its numerous Nobel Prize winners. The statement continued with a direct rebuttal: “Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy… We’re not playing with ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity, we’re playing against the coach who embodies them.”
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has not yet issued a formal response to the Israeli body’s criticism. Meanwhile, protests have been held outside the Republic of Ireland squad’s hotel as calls for a boycott gain momentum. More than 160 Irish athletes have signed an open letter from the Irish Sport for Palestine Group, urging the FAI, UEFA, and the Irish government to intervene and cancel the matches.
Signatories to the boycott letter include Olympian Ciara Mageean, former soccer international Louise Quinn, ex-rugby player Tony Ward, and boxers Tyrone McKenna and Eric Donovan. Many signatories referenced Ireland’s history of anti-colonial resistance, arguing that refusing to play would demonstrate the unifying power of sport.
The controversy stems from the conflict triggered when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military offensive in Gaza has resulted in over 70,000 Palestinian deaths according to UN estimates. Israel maintains that its actions are justified acts of self-defense and denies allegations of genocide or war crimes.
Despite the intense pressure, the FAI General Assembly voted in July to proceed with the fixtures, with 75 delegates voting in favor versus 32 against. The association warned that boycotting could result in significant financial losses estimated at €10.3m (£9m) and cause lasting damage to Irish football. Hallgrimsson recently revealed that he spoke individually with every player in his squad, acknowledging that “none of us feel comfortable playing in these games.”
Using a soccer match as a political weapon is absurd. The Israel FA’s response was surprisingly petty and unprofessional.
