Israel Confirms Closure of British Consulate in East Jerusalem

Israel has officially confirmed the decision to close the British consulate located in East Jerusalem. The move comes in the wake of the United Kingdom implementing a ban on trade with settlements in the occupied West Bank, which Israel regards as illegal under international law but considers legitimate.

The closure marks a significant diplomatic escalation between the two nations. By shutting down the consular presence, Israel is signaling its displeasure with London’s new trade restrictions, which were introduced to distinguish between goods produced in Israeli settlements and those from within Israel’s pre-1967 borders.

Diplomatic sources indicate that the decision was made in direct response to the UK policy shift. The consulate had been operating in the contested area, which Israel annexed after the 1967 Six-Day War but which the international community considers occupied Palestinian territory.

This development highlights the growing tension between Israel and several European allies over the legality and expansion of settlement activities in the West Bank. The UK government maintains that its trade measures are aimed at upholding international law and protecting consumers from unknowingly purchasing settlement goods.
