Isar Aerospace has successfully reached orbit, marking a significant breakthrough for Europe’s commercial space sector. The Munich-based company achieved the milestone on Saturday with its Spectrum rocket, deploying payloads into low Earth orbit during just its second test flight.
Stella Guillen, Isar’s Chief Commercial Officer, stated that the industry is currently “desperate” for additional launch capacity. She revealed that the company holds a commercial pipeline valued at more than 10 billion euros ($11.6 billion), driven by financed new constellation projects and expanding space initiatives.
While acknowledging that its current operations are smaller than those of U.S. competitor SpaceX, Isar is prioritizing industrialization and scalability. Guillen emphasized the goal of launching not just one rocket, but hundreds, as the company works to ramp up production following its recent success.
The privately held firm recently secured 270 million euros in Series D funding in June from investors including Porsche, Lakestar, HV Capital, and the NATO Innovation Fund to support its global launch network expansion.
The launch drew high-level political support. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called it the “beginning of a new era,” while EU defense and space commissioner Andrius Kubilius noted that Europe’s independent access to space received a major boost.
Despite the technical success, Guillen warned that Europe must expand its launch infrastructure to sustain the industry’s growth. Isar is now focused on scaling production to meet the booming demand for sovereign space capabilities.
