A coalition of Iranian Americans has initiated legal proceedings against President Donald Trump, seeking a judicial injunction to halt military operations against Iran. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday in a Washington, DC court by the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), alleges that the conflict violates constitutional checks on presidential war powers and is causing direct harm to its members and their relatives.
The complaint outlines the severe impact of the six-month-long war on plaintiffs, including US citizens and a veteran, along with family members remaining in Iran. According to the filing, some relatives were killed or injured in air strikes while at home or engaging in daily activities. Others face economic hardship due to US sanctions, limited access to medical care, and restricted ability to travel.
NIAC asserts that civilians inside Iran remain in immediate danger because the Trump administration continues the conflict without adequate legal authorization. The lawsuit states that thousands of civilians, including hundreds of children, have been killed by US forces since the war began.
“They are all in imminent danger of harm to their persons and properties proximately caused by the unconstitutional war waged by defendant President Donald J. Trump,” the complaint reads.
The legal challenge follows a September report by a United Nations fact-finding mission, which indicated that the US likely committed war crimes in Iran, particularly in strikes that resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths.
“No President should have the power to take this country into an indefinite war by himself,” NIAC President Jamal Abdi said in a statement. “This lawsuit asks a fundamental question: can one person decide, on his own, to keep an entire nation at war?”
The lawsuit comes days after Trump told world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that he was considering “annihilating” Iran if Tehran failed to return to negotiations and reach a deal to end the hostilities.
