Iranian authorities ordered the immediate closure of the French Language Centre (CLF) in Tehran on Sunday, accusing the embassy-affiliated institute of engaging in activities that breached diplomatic norms. The judiciary’s Mizan news website reported that the closure was implemented following instructions from the Tehran prosecutor’s office.
Officials alleged that the centre had operated under the pretense of providing language instruction while conducting “illegal acts that violated diplomatic conventions.” According to the allegations, the facility abused its status as a language training center to identify and cultivate networks among prominent figures in Iranian society, while also facilitating their departure from the country.
As of Sunday, there had been no immediate response from the French embassy regarding the shutdown.
The move marks the latest escalation in a period of heightened tension between Tehran and Paris. Last month, France announced the expulsion of two Iranian diplomats, a retaliatory measure following the brief arrest and subsequent banning of two French envoys to the Islamic republic. Iranian officials had accused the French diplomats of interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.
No response from the French embassy yet is telling. They’re probably scrambling to figure out their next move.
