The announcement was made by the newly appointed head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who stated that the move aims to prevent vessels from transiting the waterway without explicit permission from Iranian authorities.

The geopolitical maneuver comes as global energy markets react sharply to the rising hostilities. Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil pricing, increased by 67 cents to reach $96.95 per barrel. In the United States, these international pressures are being felt domestically, with the average price of regular gasoline hitting $4.14 a gallon as travelers headed into the Labor Day weekend. This figure represents a near-dollar increase compared to the previous year and sets a record high for any Labor Day holiday period.

Iran’s declaration follows a series of aggressive military actions, including recent U.S. strikes on three Iranian oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
