Iran Expels Swedish Diplomat in Tit-for-Tat Diplomatic Move

Iran has directed a Swedish diplomat to depart the country within 48 hours, escalating diplomatic tensions with Sweden one day after Stockholm expelled an Iranian embassy official. The move marks a direct reciprocal response to actions taken by the Swedish government.

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized Sweden’s previous decision as “unjustified.” In a statement reported by Iran’s IRNA news agency, the ministry accused Stockholm of succumbing to external influence, specifically citing the “Zionist regime,” to disrupt the operations of Iran’s embassy in Sweden.

Alireza Yousefi, the director general for Western Europe at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, summoned the Swedish ambassador to Tehran on Thursday to formally protest Swedish policies. Yousefi raised concerns regarding Sweden’s alleged hosting of “anti-Iranian terrorist elements and groups.” The ministry warned that it would take necessary measures to protect national rights and interests, including through reciprocal actions.

The diplomatic friction began on Wednesday when Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs announced that an Iranian official was asked to leave due to activities deemed incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The Swedish government stated the decision was made to safeguard its citizens and national interests.

Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer provided further detail during a television appearance, stating that the expulsion was linked to Iran’s alleged activities targeting “Jewish and Israeli interests.” He asserted that Iran has long conducted operations threatening security within Sweden, utilizing criminal networks to achieve its objectives.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry also invoked Sweden’s obligations under international law, specifically the 1961 Vienna Convention, warning that any disruption to the duties of the Iranian embassy would entail international responsibility for Sweden.
