Iran Demands U.S. Admit Defeat as Ceasefire Talks Stall

Iranian officials have stated that the conflict with the United States will only conclude once Washington acknowledges defeat and withdraws, even as back-channel negotiations continue regarding a potential truce. The contradictory signals emerged Tuesday as military rhetoric intensified alongside diplomatic movements.

General Hossein Mohebbi, a spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), delivered a message to the American public during a news conference in Tehran. He released what he described as a “letter to the American people,” urging citizens to protest against President Donald Trump’s policies ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Mohebbi accused the U.S. government of using Iran’s nuclear program as a pretext to plunder the nation’s resources and reestablish colonial control.

The timing of the appeal appears strategically aimed at influencing the U.S. political landscape, where Trump’s Republican Party faces significant challenges in maintaining congressional majorities. In a separate interview with the Associated Press, Mohebbi called on Americans to demand a change in leadership to reject what he characterized as warmongering.

Despite the harsh military rhetoric, signs of diplomatic engagement persisted. An official cited by Reuters reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi received a response from the United States concerning a seven-day ceasefire proposal put forward last week. The plan, initially discussed during the U.N. General Assembly, included provisions for the phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and was designed to build mutual trust based on a mid-June memorandum of understanding that previously collapsed.

While President Trump publicly rejected the Iranian proposal on Saturday, Maj. Gen. Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, indicated that Tehran is still awaiting an official reply through Qatari intermediaries. Rezaei described Trump as being “trapped in a quagmire,” incapable of deciding between escalation and negotiation. He also criticized recent U.S. sanctions on airlines as an “air blockade” indicative of American desperation.

On the economic front, the U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions Tuesday targeting ten individuals and entities across Iran, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Pakistan. These measures, part of the Trump administration’s “Operation Economic Outcast,” aim to disrupt supply chains supporting Iran’s military logistics agency. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the department would continue to isolate enablers of the Iranian regime.
