Iran Anticipates US Reply Tuesday on Strait of Hormuz Reopening Proposal

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran is expecting a formal response from the United States on Tuesday concerning its proposal to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The comments were reported by state media late Monday while Araghchi was addressing the press in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to Araghchi, Qatari intermediaries have presented various ideas to both sides. He noted that Qatar plans to raise the matter with the American side again, after which Washington’s final position will be communicated to Iran. The foreign minister expressed hope that this process would be completed by Tuesday.

“The current focus is solely on the Strait of Hormuz, and the reopening of the strait is contingent upon the fulfilment of certain conditions that we have communicated to the other side,” Araghchi said, outlining Tehran’s prerequisites for lifting its blockade of the waterway.

In exchange for reopening the shipping route, Iran is demanding a comprehensive set of guarantees. These include a regional ceasefire, the unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad, the lifting of sanctions on its oil sector, and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. Additionally, Tehran has called for a seven-day ceasefire across the Middle East, extending to Lebanon where its ally Hezbollah continues to clash with Israeli forces.

The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz began in late February following US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Prior to the outbreak of conflict, the strait served as a critical conduit for approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. In response to Iran’s imposition of a blockade on the route, Washington established its own blockade targeting Iranian ports.

Diplomatic engagement has intensified recently. Last week, Araghchi held discussions in New York with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks followed reports that President Donald Trump had rejected Iran’s initial seven-day truce proposal but indicated that further negotiations are expected to take place the following week.
