The revamped Siri is built on Google’s Gemini models, replacing previous iterations that relied on extended knowledge bases and less reliable integrations. This architectural shift allows the assistant to handle multi-step commands, draft messages based on extracted context from emails and files, and perform detailed research tasks. Early developer versions experienced some minor issues, particularly with sports queries, but the public release demonstrates considerable accuracy in retrieving information such as team lineups and World Cup scores.
A standout feature is Siri’s ability to interpret on-screen content. Users can ask questions about what is currently displayed, whether it is a sports lineup, a startup’s funding details, or a restaurant menu. The Camera app now integrates this capability, allowing users to identify items in real-time. For example, when shown a beverage at an Indian restaurant, Siri correctly identified the drink as likely being Aam Panna after receiving contextual cues about the location.
Access to Siri is now consolidated within a dedicated app, enabling users to review past conversations and customize the assistant’s voice and expressiveness through settings. Apple also aims to improve interoperability with third-party applications, though smooth handoffs between Siri and external apps will depend on developers updating their software post-release.
Beyond Siri, iOS 27 introduces several enhancements under the Apple Intelligence banner. A new natural language interface for Shortcuts allows users to create automations by simply describing them, such as “show me today’s to-do items every morning at 8 am.” Safari users can now set custom alerts to track changes on specific web pages, while the Photos app gains “reframe” and “extend” tools. Additionally, the eraser feature has been refined to reduce visual artifacts when removing objects from images.
Practical quality-of-life improvements include a new clipboard system that facilitates easier pasting of links, photos, and text across different applications. The update also addresses user feedback regarding the Liquid Glass aesthetic, offering granular controls to adjust transparency levels rather than forcing preset choices. Network stability is further enhanced by intelligent switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data when connections falter.
Child safety remains a priority in this release, with a new setup flow recommending essential apps and providing parents with tools to set schedules, time limits, and remote access approvals. The system also includes warnings when children are exposed to nudity in Messages, FaceTime, and other applications.
iOS 27 is available for iPhone 11 and later models, as well as iPhone SE (2nd generation) and newer devices. Users can download the update via Settings > General > Software Update.
