An bug affecting iOS 27 has been reported to cause temporary freezing on iPhones when users perform specific swipe combinations. First highlighted by 9to5Mac, the issue does not result in permanent damage to the device.
The freeze is triggered by rapidly alternating between swiping down to open the Notification Center and the Control Center. Once activated, icons and buttons at the top of the screen become unresponsive, preventing the user from tapping or swiping further. Despite the unresponsiveness, the problem is easily reversible without needing to restore the device.
To resolve the issue, users must perform a manual force restart. Because the touchscreen is frozen, the standard power-off slider cannot be used. Instead, press and quickly release the volume up button, then press and quickly release the volume down button. Immediately after, hold down the side power button until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Users have reported that holding the side button may require more than 10 seconds to register the command.
Force restarting clears the device’s RAM and terminates any apps that may be causing software conflicts, which is why it is often the first step in troubleshooting mobile device issues. While Apple is expected to release a software update to address this vulnerability in the future, iPhone owners running iOS 27 should be mindful of their gesture habits until a fix is deployed.
Nice workaround. Force restarts are always the nuclear option, but at least it clears the RAM without losing data.
