The International squad retains a three-point advantage over the United States as they approach the final day of competition at the Presidents Cup at Medinah. The non-US, non-Asian team requires just five points from Sunday’s singles matches to claim their first trophy in 28 years.
After trailing in every match at various stages, the Internationals secured a 10-5-7.5 aggregate score following Day 3. The American hosts dominated the morning four-ball sessions, claiming two victories and a draw from four matches. However, the teams divided the afternoon foursomes, with Canada’s Corey Conners securing a crucial par save on the 18th hole to win the final match and maintain the overall three-point margin.
Geoff Ogilvy, who captains the International team, acknowledged the difficulty of the task given the opposition’s performance. “We were down in every match, and to come back and get one and a half points out of this morning, we felt that was a little victory because we were down everywhere,” Ogilvy stated.
He added: “This afternoon, the same thing happened. Team USA played so well all day. They played some really high-level foursomes, especially this afternoon. For the boys to somehow come back and pinch two points out of that and split the session was amazing.”
The International team has managed only one Presidents Cup victory since the event began in 1994, and that triumph did not take place on American soil. The tournament concludes on Sunday with 12 singles matches. Either side requiring 15.5 points will secure the title.
