Intel Reportedly Reviving Old Sockets for DDR4-Compatible CPUs Amid Memory Crisis

Intel is reportedly planning to release new processors built on the older LGA 1700 socket platform, a move that would allow compatibility with DDR4 memory. According to motherboard maker Gigabyte, these updates are expected in early 2027, offering a strategic response to the current hardware market dynamics.

The LGA 1700 socket, introduced in 2021, has remained relevant due to its ability to support both DDR4 and DDR5 memory standards. PC Gamer reports that upcoming refreshes of Raptor Lake and Alder Lake chips may be configured to work with DDR4 RAM. This decision appears driven by the “AI-fueled RAMpocalypse,” a period during which memory prices have surged dramatically due to high demand from artificial intelligence workloads.

The price disparity between memory types is significant. A 32GB kit of DDR4 RAM is currently available for approximately $210, whereas a comparable 32GB DDR5 kit costs upwards of $480. By offering processors that can utilize the more budget-friendly DDR4, Intel aims to provide an accessible option for consumers who do not wish to pay premium prices for next-generation memory.

While Intel has not officially confirmed the specific roadmap details, Robert Hallock, the company’s VP, recently indicated that Raptor Lake chips would remain available for “years to come” as a cost-effective alternative to DDR5-only systems. He noted, “LGA 1700 is still a good socket. Lots of people are still interested in DDR4, so we’ll keep offering.”
