Indonesia Tests Mosques as Earthquake Warning Hubs in Five-Year Trial

Engineers in Indonesia are exploring a unique solution to improve early warning coverage in one of the world’s most seismically active regions: repurposing the loudspeakers traditionally used to broadcast the call to prayer. A new five-year trial is currently evaluating whether these ubiquitous fixtures at mosques can also function as effective alarm systems during earthquakes.

The initiative targets hard-to-reach areas where conventional warning infrastructure may be lacking. By leveraging the widespread presence of mosques, scientists hope to extend alert networks to the most remote communities, potentially saving lives by providing critical seconds of notice before seismic events strike.
