India’s Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth movement that gained prominence through satire, has threatened to ignite nationwide protests if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not step down by Saturday. Abhijeet Dipke, the party’s founder, announced on Friday that demonstrations will commence in Mumbai on October 2 should Kumar fail to resign.
The CJP emerged on Instagram in May after India’s chief justice described unemployed young people as “cockroaches” and “parasites.” The group has since challenged the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, capitalizing on public frustration regarding governance and electoral integrity.
The latest pressure on Kumar follows a report by The Indian Express published on Wednesday. The article revealed that two fellow election commissioners had raised objections or expressed concerns to Kumar at least 14 times over the past ten months, primarily concerning the revision of voter rolls initiated last year.
Opposition parties have seized upon these reports, with the main opposition Congress party announcing protest marches at state election offices across the country on Friday. They are demanding Kumar’s arrest, removal from office, and an independent review of voter-list changes made during his tenure. Critics allege that the election commission has systematically deleted millions of voter names and added new entries without adequate verification to benefit Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In response, the Election Commission of India dismissed the allegations, stating that differing opinions are a standard part of institutional deliberations and asserting that all their actions remain within legal bounds. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra defended the commission on Wednesday, accusing the opposition of launching a smear campaign because they continue to lose elections. He emphasized that no constitutional body in India operates under dictatorial rule.
The CJP previously demonstrated its mobilization power in July when sustained protests led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following a scandal involving exam-paper leaks. That event marked one of the most significant political setbacks for the Prime Minister since assuming office in 2014.
Reiterating the urgency of their demand, Dipke posted on X: “If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign by tomorrow, CJP will begin its nationwide protest from Mumbai on 2 October, and take it to cities across India.” He added a call to action tied to the upcoming holiday: “This Gandhi Jayanti let’s pledge to save democracy,” referencing the October 2 observance of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.
