Authorities in Argentina have temporarily restricted public access to the Iguazu Falls following a significant surge in water levels driven by intense rainfall associated with a strong El Niño weather pattern. Officials expressed concerns that the rising waters could cause the Iguazu River to overflow its banks.
National park administrators implemented the precautionary closure on Monday after monitoring data revealed the river’s flow rate had exceeded 12,000 cubic metres per second. This volume represents more than six times the average flow rate typically recorded at the site.
Six times normal flow is insane. El Niño is really showing its teeth this season, isn’t it?
Such a shame! I was planning my trip there next month. Hopefully it reopens soon.
