In the field of biomechanics, researchers proposed a universal scientific definition for kissing applicable to all animals. They defined it as “a non-agonistic interaction involving directed intraspecific oral-oral contact, with some movement of the lips or oral structures and without the transfer of food.” This definition encompasses great apes, domestic dogs and cats, pigeons, penguins, squirrels, black bears, and tortoises, although the meaning behind these acts may vary.
The Economics prize went to a study published in PNAS titled “Higher Social Class Predicts Increased Unethical Behavior.” Through seven experiments, researchers investigated links between socioeconomic status and actions such as traffic violations, cheating, and stealing candy from children. The findings indicated that individuals from higher social classes tend to prioritize self-interest more frequently than others.
Highlighting the potential of entomophagy, the Chemistry prize was awarded to scientists who analyzed the protein-rich substance produced by mother cockroaches of the species Diploptera punctata. This “milk,” which concentrates proteins, fats, and sugars into energy-dense crystals within embryos, offers insights into high-efficiency nutrient storage.
The Medicine prize was a posthumous award for Japanese scientist Unno Tokuji, who spent his final years studying proper nasal hygiene. His research on the aerodynamics and pressure of nasal breathing recommended blowing one nostril at a time with a long, forceful exhalation rather than a short, weak blow.
In Biology, researchers determined the defensive biting patterns of the highly venomous South American pit viper Bothrops jararaca by applying pressure to different body parts. They found that stepping on the head resulted in a 44 percent chance of being bitten, the body carried a 20 percent risk, and the tail had the lowest risk at 11 percent.
The Physics prize addressed a common public restroom issue: urinal splash-back. Mathematical models identified that lower impact angles significantly reduce droplet rebound, leading to the design of splash-free urinal prototypes.
In Technology, scientists discovered that dead mosquitoes could serve as nozzles for 3-D printers. The mosquito’s proboscis functions as an extremely fine needle, offering a naturally optimized solution for precision instruments.
The Olfaction prize confirmed what many parents suspect: young children smell more pleasant than teenagers. Researchers found that parents rated the body odor of young children more favorably, suggesting scent plays a role in familial bonding.
The Peace Prize honored a study on interpersonal preferences, which revealed that people generally prefer friends who are kind to them but cruel to their enemies, rather than those who are universally good.
Finally, the Soil Science prize recognized the “underwear index,” a method where participants buried cotton underwear to measure decomposition. The number of holes left in the fabric indicates the level of cellulose-breaking microbial activity, serving as a simple metric for farmland health.
