Hurricane Isaias Becomes First of 2026 Atlantic Season, Threatens Gulf Coast

Hurricane Isaias intensified from a tropical storm late Wednesday and is now the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, with forecasts indicating landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast this weekend. The system poses a threat to parts of Mississippi, Alabama, and the western Florida panhandle.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency across more than two dozen counties, mobilizing resources to prepare for potential severe impacts. Similarly, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency for 40 counties.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Isaias was located approximately 460 miles southwest of the Mississippi River mouth on Wednesday with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Forecasters expect the storm, pronounced “ees-ah-EE-ah,” to pass north of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday before moving toward the coast on Friday.

A hurricane warning has been issued for the northern Gulf Coast from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay/Gulf county line in Florida. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for portions of the Louisiana and Florida coasts, while a storm surge warning covers the area from the Mississippi River mouth to Yankeetown, Florida. Residents can expect moderate to substantial rainfall across coastal and inland southeastern regions through next week.

Isaias’ development marks the latest date in 111 years for the Atlantic season’s first hurricane to form, tying a record set on Oct. 8, 1905, based on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data. The 2026 season, which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, has been notably quiet. Meteorologists attribute the low activity to a strong El Niño pattern that suppresses tropical storm growth through cooler water temperatures and increased wind shear.

On average, the Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes, according to climate data from 1991 to 2020. Historically, the first named storm forms in mid- to late-June, the first hurricane in early to mid-August, and the first major hurricane in late August or early September.
