Hurricane Isaias Becomes First Atlantic Storm of 2026 as It Strengthens Toward US Coast

Tropical Storm Isaias has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane, marking the first storm of its kind in the Atlantic basin for 2026. The system, which formed earlier in the week, is projected to strengthen further to Category 2 by Friday morning as it moves toward the United States.

According to the US National Hurricane Center, Isaias is expected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast—likely in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida—between late Friday and early Saturday. Meteorologists warn of damaging winds, torrential rainfall, and dangerous storm surges that could inundate low-lying coastal areas.

As the storm swirls off the coast, parts of Mexico may see the initial effects, with rainfall totals reaching up to 4 inches (100mm) around the Bay of Campeche and the Yucatan Peninsula. The US Gulf Coast faces even heavier precipitation, with forecasts calling for 3 to 6 inches (75-150mm) from southeastern Louisiana to northwestern Florida. Isolated areas could receive up to 10 inches (250mm), raising the risk of flash and river flooding, particularly in urban environments.

The US National Weather Service has issued hurricane and storm surge watches for the region. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency across 25 counties in response to the impending threat.

Isaias ends a prolonged period of hurricane silence in the Atlantic, which forecasters attribute to a developing strong El Niño pattern. This climate phenomenon has increased wind shear over the Caribbean and Atlantic, suppressing storm development. While Isaias is the ninth tropical storm of the season, it is the first to achieve hurricane status.

The storm developed in a favorable window characterized by limited wind shear and sea surface temperatures of 30 to 31 degrees Celsius (86-88 degrees Fahrenheit). Forecasters note that Isaias may encounter increased wind shear as it tracks northward, which could constrain further intensification, though exact projections are expected to shift in the coming days.

Even after weakening inland due to the loss of warm ocean fuel, Isaias is anticipated to deliver disruptive wet weather to the southeastern United States, extending as far north as the Tennessee Valley and the Carolinas.

  1. El Niño kept us safe for so long. Is it just luck that Isaias hit now, or is the climate shifting?

  2. Finally, this quiet season feels over. The 10-inch rain risk in my neighborhood is terrifying though.
