Hundreds of Iranian Women Run Tehran Race Without Hijabs in Defiant Protest

Hundreds of women participated in a running event in Tehran on September 19, openly defying Iran’s mandatory hijab regulations by competing without headscarves. The gathering has been described as one of the most significant public acts of resistance since the onset of the 2022 “women, life, freedom” uprising.

The event highlighted a stark division within the capital, often characterized as a tale of two cities. While the runners challenged state-imposed dress codes, a separate march took place on the same day featuring veiled women who demonstrated their support for the government and the ongoing war effort.
