Live Text allows iPhone users to interact directly with text captured through the device’s camera. Available on models ranging from the iPhone XS onward running iOS 15 or later, the feature enables users to copy, share, look up, or translate text found on websites, signs, posters, and flyers.
While similar to the Visual Intelligence tool introduced with Apple Intelligence, Live Text does not require an iPhone compatible with that newer AI suite and is focused exclusively on text recognition. To use it, simply open the Camera app, point your device at the desired text, and wait for a yellow border to frame the content. A small grid icon will then appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Tapping this icon reveals a menu with various options. Users can choose to copy the text, translate it into another language, or select all content within the frame. Additionally, specific elements such as phone numbers, email addresses, and website URLs often trigger quick-action buttons at the bottom of the display, allowing for immediate calls, messages, or map searches.
The feature is particularly useful for travelers and professionals. Common use cases include extracting event details from a physical flyer, sharing information from a handwritten note without resorting to screenshots, converting currencies, or accessing contact information posted on a business sign.
If the feature becomes intrusive, it can be disabled by navigating to Settings, selecting Camera, and toggling off the “Show Detected Text” option.
Live Text vs. Visual Intelligence
Apple launched Visual Intelligence with iOS 18.1 in September 2024 as part of its Apple Intelligence rollout. Unlike Live Text, which is limited to text, Visual Intelligence analyzes broader visual contexts, such as plants, landmarks, or business exteriors. It requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or newer model.
Activation methods for Visual Intelligence include long-pressing the Camera Control button, assigning it to the Action Button via settings, or selecting Siri from the Camera app if Siri AI is enabled. Users can also add a Visual Intelligence icon to the Control Center.
Once activated, Visual Intelligence provides enhanced context through Siri, supports Google Image Search, and can integrate with ChatGPT for detailed inquiries. It also retains Live Text functionality, allowing users to translate, read aloud, summarize, or tap on contact details within the same interface.
Honestly, I still can’t tell the difference between Live Text and Visual Intelligence. Apple’s naming keeps confusing me.
As a frequent traveler, the translation feature alone makes this essential. Much faster than typing things into a separate app.
Does Live Text work reliably with messy handwriting? I’ve had mixed results with cursive notes in the past.
I never realized I could tap phone numbers directly. This is going to save me so much typing time!
