For drivers whose vehicles support the feature, enabling Apple CarPlay via cable or wireless connection represents a significant quality-of-life improvement. This setup eliminates the need for cumbersome phone mounts, bringing navigation and media controls directly to the vehicle’s infotainment screen. With Siri undergoing a substantial redesign in iOS 27, voice interactions are becoming more reliable, allowing for truly hands-free operation while driving.
Although CarPlay’s default interface prioritizes safety with bold typography and large touch targets, several adjustments can enhance usability. By default, the system operates in dark mode to prevent screen glare in low-light conditions. However, if readability suffers during daylight hours, users can switch to light mode or select the automatic setting through the Settings menu. This allows the interface to adapt dynamically based on ambient lighting.
Visual customization extends beyond brightness. Within the wallpaper settings, drivers can choose from a selection of Apple-designed backgrounds featuring various colors and patterns, though uploading personal photos from the device gallery is not supported. Additionally, the icon customization option allows users to swap the standard dark icons for transparent ones that align with Apple’s Liquid Glass design language. Text size adjustments are also available in the Accessibility submenu for improved legibility.
Organization of applications occurs on the iPhone rather than the car display. Users can navigate to General settings, select CarPlay, and choose their specific vehicle to access the Apps menu. Here, dragging handles allows for reordering the application list, ensuring frequently used tools appear on the primary screen. While some default apps cannot be deleted, they can be dragged to the bottom of the list to declutter the view. The number of visible apps per page is determined by the screen dimensions of the car’s infotainment system.
Widgets, introduced to CarPlay with iOS 26, provide another layer of personalization. Accessed by swiping right from the main dashboard, this separate page displays stacks of information such as weather, calendar, clock, and media status. To manage which widgets appear, users return to the CarPlay settings on their iPhone and select Widgets. After ensuring the toggle is enabled, drivers can add, remove, or reorder widget stacks. This ensures that critical information remains immediately accessible without requiring drivers to sift through unnecessary data while on the road.
