How to Block and Unblock Phone Numbers on Android

While modern smartphones have become indispensable tools, they also present significant downsides, chief among them being the ease with which scammers, spammers, and other nuisance callers can reach users. Fortunately, Android devices offer straightforward mechanisms to block these unwanted contacts directly on the device.

The exact steps for blocking a number can vary depending on the specific Android ecosystem, but the process generally begins within the Phone or Contacts application. Additionally, users retain the ability to reverse this action and unblock contacts if needed.

For Samsung device owners, there are two primary methods to block calls. To block a saved contact, open the Contacts app, select the individual, tap the menu represented by three dots, and choose the option to block the contact. To block an unsaved number, users should open the Phone app, navigate to the Settings menu, select Block numbers, and then add the specific phone number. If the number has recently called, it can also be blocked via the Recents section by accessing the call details and selecting the block option.

On Google Pixel phones and other devices running stock Android, the procedure is similarly direct. Users open the Phone app, access the Call history through the More menu, tap on a specific call from the number they wish to block, and select the Block/report spam option. Once blocked, incoming calls from that number are automatically declined before ringing, and related messages are typically diverted to a spam or blocked folder.

It is important to note that number blocking is managed locally by the device rather than the mobile carrier. Consequently, if a user transfers their SIM card to a new device, they will likely need to re-establish their blocked numbers.

Reversing a block follows a comparable path. On Samsung devices using the Contacts app, users select the blocked contact, open the options menu, and choose Unblock contact. Via the Phone app, users navigate to Settings, then Block numbers, and tap the minus sign next to the desired number. For Pixel and stock Android users, the process involves going to Settings, selecting Blocked numbers, and tapping the clear icon next to the entry.

Upon unblocking, the contact regains the ability to call and text normally. However, users should be aware that any calls placed during the period when the number was blocked are not retroactively added to the call log and cannot be recovered.
