How 200 LinkedIn Messages Landed a Job: Expert Advice on Networking

Networking remains a critical yet intimidating step for many job seekers, with recent data indicating that 44% of Generation Z professionals identify a lack of professional connections as their primary obstacle to securing entry-level roles. Despite these challenges, experts suggest that strategic outreach and persistence can yield significant results.

Taylor Crow, a sales professional, demonstrated this approach by sending more than 200 direct messages on LinkedIn while still studying. Although she described the experience as awkward, the effort was instrumental in landing her desired position. Her colleague Vicky Peterlin, 24, echoed this sentiment, noting that success often comes down to overcoming the fear of rejection rather than innate social skill.

Nicole Leverich, LinkedIn’s chief communications officer, emphasizes that networking does not require an extensive existing contact list. She advises starting with familiar contacts such as former professors, classmates, and family friends. Leverich also shares her own journey from a small town in Oregon to a communications role in San Francisco without prior industry connections, attributing her success to volunteering for difficult tasks and building relationships incrementally.

When reaching out online, Leverich recommends conducting thorough research on the recipient and referencing their recent posts or shared interests. She stresses that requests should be specific and require less than five minutes to fulfill, followed by a simple thank-you note to maintain goodwill.

Building rapport before needing a favor is another key strategy. Leverich suggests engaging with industry professionals a year or two before actively job hunting and offering value in return, rather than immediately asking for employment. For those hesitant to message directly, commenting on posts can serve as a low-pressure entry point.

For in-person events, starting conversations can be as simple as complimenting someone’s attire or asking about their reasons for attending. Leverich encourages attendees to start with short visits of 15 to 30 minutes to gradually build confidence.

Madison Brown, who works in tech partnerships, highlights the importance of clarity and authenticity. He observes that many young professionals fail to articulate their goals clearly. Brown advises being direct about what one hopes to achieve from an interaction, noting that honesty often opens more doors than vague outreach.
