Houthi Strike on Riyadh Airport Kills 13, Signaling New Gulf Instability

In a significant escalation of regional hostilities, Houthi rebels launched a deadly missile strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday. The attack has resulted in at least 13 fatalities and left approximately 300 individuals injured. This incident represents the single most lethal assault on a Gulf nation since the onset of the US and Israel’s military campaign against Iran in February.

For Saudi Arabia, a country that has largely been insulated from such high casualty events, the death toll is unprecedented and is expected to provoke a severe retaliatory response. The strike marks a sharp turning point in a regional conflagration that continues to intensify.

According to analysis by Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik, the Gulf has entered a new, irreversible era of instability. While the absolute number of casualties remains lower than those seen in Gaza and Iran, the gradual erosion of security in key nations such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates has fundamentally altered the region. Malik warns that if regional leaders believe they can depend on traditional alliances to maintain order, they are mistaken, as the underlying dynamics of peace and security have shifted dramatically.
