The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen announced on Wednesday that Iran-backed Houthi rebels have initiated a new offensive targeting the southern region, aiming to seize control of the strategically vital Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
In an interview with FRANCE 24’s Mark Owen, Adam Baron, a fellow at the New America Foundation, highlighted the potential geopolitical implications of the escalating conflict. He noted that if both the Houthis and other regional factions gain the ability to disrupt maritime traffic in both the Red Sea and the Gulf, it could serve as a powerful tool for forcing a political settlement.
“This would be a tremendous exercise of leverage to put pressure for a resolution,” Baron explained, underscoring the growing stakes in the ongoing Yemeni crisis.
